Games are an age-old practice used for entertaining, relaxing -and learning. It is truly the type of everyday pedagogy that engages, excites and motivates people of all ages. A single game won't take you far but using the game elements, gamification, is what makes it a universal and interesting tool for all teachers. Gamification helps engage students and make learning more efficient. The magic of games creates a reality where new rules apply: students can try and fail in a safe environment. Mobile technology allows gamification to be used easily within and outside the classroom. Seppo is a gamification tool that helps teachers gamify their lessons and curriculums. The product was developed by Finnish teachers and it has users in 40 countries. The founders of the company share the lessons learned and insights of their users: how have teachers used gamification over the years and how are students responding to it.

Mr. Riku Alkio, Founder & CEO, Seppo - Finland
Mr. Rui da Silva, Director of Innovation – Chief of Innovation & Digital Officer, GEMS Dubai American Academy – UAE

The Alef Education content team is the leader in the Middle East in an innovative new approach to educational technology. Still in its early stages, the Alef platform is a multi-faceted tool that is revolutionizing classrooms in the U.A.E. Tailored to the specific needs of the MENA region, the Alef platform uses cutting-edge technology, the latest educational research, and a student-centered approach to create a milestone in the legacy of educational reform initiated by H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Our presentation will outline the specifics of our unique content design for Alef, the interactive user experience, and the promising results from the initial pilot groups. The team will provide a detailed analysis and deconstruction of this transformative project that has worldwide implications for ESL education. Complete with teacher testimonials, evidence of student engagement, assessment data analysis, and samples of the Alef platform experience, this dynamic presentation will provide the audience with an in-depth introduction to the exciting possibilities Alef Education has in store.

This initiative with Alef Education has allowed us to put our educational theory into practice based on our experience as classroom teachers and curriculum developers. Over the last year, we have collected evidence of the success of our approach in a local pilot school. The key focus of this presentation is to share our unique experiences and compelling results in piloting this innovative approach to education.

Ms. Amber J. Schoer, Learning and Education Analyst, Alef Education - UAE
Mr. Michael A. Ulanski, Administrative Advisor, Alef Education - UAE

Celebrating its 10th Year, VISS was established by The Ruler of Sharjah; His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, in conjunction with the State of Victoria, in Australia. Part of the vision was to be a beacon school in the area and VISS prides itself in its innovative approach.

Just over a year ago, Director of Digital Learning, Stephanie Bernier decided to get a team together to compete in the National WER robotics competition. Despite the relative inexperience of the team, they were crowned national champions and recently represented UAE at the World Championships in Shanghai.

Steph will be talking about this journey and Head of Secondary/Deputy Principal Jim Stearns will discuss how to build a culture in a school to generate this sort of success

Mr. Jim Stearns, Deputy Principal/Head, Secondary School, Victoria International School Sharjah (VISS) - United Arab Emirates

What is the full scope of impact of technology in schools? We know that technology has touchpoints everywhere, from the IT that supports operations to the data systems that manage our workflows to learning outcomes derived from teachers and students using computers. And of course, the leadership competencies and external relations needed to ensure the ecology of technology in schools works and is sustainable. However, there is no guide or framework available to school leadership on this breadth of technology impact. In this session, we will discuss the work being done to create a Blueprint of Technology in Education to help schools understand how technology impacts them and how to leverage it.

Mr. Matt Harris, Deputy Head for Learning Technology, British School Jakarta - Indonesia
